High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the lung in rheumatoid arthritis

Summary

• Both pulmonary fibrosis and airway disease may be seen in "rheumatoid lung disease".
  
• Abnormalities are common on HRCT even in the asymptomatic population.
  
• Fibrosis may be due to the rheumatoid disease or result from methotrexate or gold therapy.
  
• Large and small airways may be involved.
  
• Bronchiectasis, seen in up to a third of patients, is associated with a reduction in life expectancy.
