The new ionising radiation regulations—will they make a difference?

Summary

• Revised regulations regarding the protection from ionising radiation of workers (Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999) and patients (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000) have been introduced in 2000.
  
• The legislation represents a welcome attempt to enshrine in law the principles of good radiological and radiographic practice.
  
• Departments of Clinical Radiology have little to fear from the new regulations, but a considerable amount of work, and close liaison with clinicians, will be required to achieve the aims of the legislators and to demonstrate compliance to the inspectors.
