A revolution in surgical oncology: sentinel lymph node biopsy

• Sentinel nodes are lymph nodes drained directly from a tumour (1–5 nodes).
  
• Sentinel nodes are highly predictive of involvement of the lymph node basin (>95%) status.
  
• Sentinel nodes can be detected with >95% accuracy.
  
• Breast cancer and melanoma are the tumours for which greatest benefit has been shown.
  
• Sentinel node biopsy decreases unnecessary lymph node dissection and may be cost effective.
