• Ultrasound is the imaging method of choice for morphology.
  
• Scintigraphy is the investigation for function.
  
• CT and MRI are used for the evaluation of mediastinal extension and tumour invasion.
  
• Imaging with non-iodine labelled radiopharmaceuticals may be helpful in identifying the site of recurrent disease in patients with rising thyroglobulin levels and negative radioiodine scans.
  
• ¹⁸FDG PET scanning has the highest sensitivity for detecting dedifferentiating recurrent disease.
