Ultrasound of soft tissue masses

• Ultrasound can reliably confirm or exclude the presence of a soft tissue mass.
  
• Ultrasound can differentiate solid from cystic lesions.
  
• Solid tumours may have specific appearances on ultrasound, but biopsy is often required.
  
• In suspected malignancy, ultrasound guided biopsy should be preceded by staging MRI, and only performed once discussed with the surgeon.
