• Ultrasound allows dynamic assessment of inguinofemoral hernias.
  
• The accuracy of ultrasound for detecting hernias is yet to be established.
  
• In the patient with equivocal features, ultrasound can also evaluate surrounding muscles and joints.
  
• In athletes with groin pain ultrasound is a good first line imaging tool, but MRI may be necessary in specific conditions.
