Imaging of developmental intracranial abnormalities

W K Chong, MD, FRCR

Department of Radiology, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London WC1N 3JH, UK

  1. The choice of imaging modality varies with clinical context.
  2. MRI is the best single modality for providing the most comprehensive and detailed assessment of developmental intracranial abnormalities as well as for distinguishing between developmental and acquired disorders.
  3. The radiologist should be familiar with imaging artefacts, as well as the key radiological features of the wide variety of developmental disorders, their embryology and classification.
  4. Abnormalities should be classified as accurately as possible, as the radiological diagnosis influences genetic counselling.
  5. Technical issues of sedation, anaesthesia and cranial dysmorphism need consideration in paediatric practice.
