Image processing, PACS and telemedicine: how to link a nuclear medicine network to a PACS network

• Nuclear medicine data involves the extensive use of image processing and complex display protocols.
  
• These derived images cannot be readily handled on a picture archiving and communication system console.
  
• A solution proposed is to modify such complex display protocols such that digital imaging and communications in medicine hanging protocols can then be used. Telenuclear medicine networks have been established at a number of sites and results presented from Thailand and Morocco.
  
• Handling nuclear medicine data in such types of network has the benefit of requiring little bandwidth, but the need for additional image processing must be managed.
