Imaging and treatment of uterine fibroids including the role of uterine artery embolisation

• Up to 77% of women have uterine fibroids on histological examination of hysterectomy specimens.
  
• Imaging is used primarily to exclude other causes of pelvic masses.
  
• Fibroid embolisation is a relatively new technique that awaits long term data for validation. Short term data show that 80% of patients are happy with the improvement in their symptoms.
  
• The indications for uterine artery embolisation for uterine fibroid disease are the same as for hysterectomy or myomectomy.
  
• The most common complication is the post embolisation syndrome. 1% of women require hysterectomy after embolisation usually because of infection.
