Nuclear medicine in imaging head and neck malignancies

• Technetium-99m pertechnetate or iodine-123 scintigraphy are valuable investigations in conjunction with ultrasound and fine needle aspiration in the investigation of thyroid nodules.
  
• Radioactive iodine isotopes contribute significantly to the diagnostic strategy of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC).
  
• Iodine-131 is widely used therapeutically to ablate remnant thyroid tissue post-operatively, to treat metastases from DTC and as a diagnostic tracer for detection of metastatic disease.
  
• ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose (¹⁸FDG) PET is likely to have a significant role in non-iodine avid DTC and other thyroid cancers.
  
• ¹⁸FDG PET plays a complementary role in diagnosis, staging and treatment evaluation of squamous cell head and neck cancers.
