Imaging of the jaundiced child

• In both infants and older children ultrasound should be the initial radiological investigation and further imaging dependent upon the findings.
  
• Imaging primarily aims to differentiate extrahepatic from intrahepatic causes.
  
• Any neonate with jaundice persisting beyond 2 weeks of age warrants investigation.
  
• The diagnosis and treatment of biliary atresia should be performed prior to 8 weeks of age to achieve the best long term surgical success.
  
• Gallstones are increasing prevalent in older children and underlying choledochal cysts should be sought when bile duct stones found.
  
• Hepatic masses are an important differential in the investigation of jaundice and usually require evaluation with CT or MRI.
