Alteration in bowel habit

- An alteration or change in bowel habit is a common symptom.
- Colorectal cancer and Crohn's disease are common causes of this symptom that can be diagnosed radiologically.
- Barium enema is still a frequently performed investigation in the UK, but has been replaced, to an extent, by CT-based techniques.
Alteration in bowel habit is a common symptom, and has many causes. Patients are frequently referred for imaging to exclude colorectal carcinoma, and the investigation of this diagnosis is thoroughly discussed in this review, together with other causes of alteration in bowel habit that can be diagnosed radiologically.
