Imaging of the elbow

• The elbow is a complex joint that is prone to injury.
  
• Rupture of the distal biceps tendon occurs at the insertion.
  
• Injury of the collateral ligaments can be assessed with dynamic ultrasound or MRI.
  
• Tennis elbow or tendinosis of the common extensor origin usually demonstrates increased vascularity on ultrasound.
  
• Synovitis is often non-specific on imaging.
  
• Osteochondritis dissecans occurs in an older age group and has a worse prognosis than Panner's disease.
  
• The diagnosis of loose bodies may be aided by arthrography.
  
• The elbow is a common site for entrapment neuropathies.
  

This article outlines a practical approach to the imaging of pathological conditions of the elbow based on the clinical presentation. The appropriate use of the various imaging modalities is discussed.
