This edition is the first of two in the series on musculoskeletal radiology and covers the common problems related to the appendicular skeleton. The chapters relating to joints are divided along anatomical lines on the basis that much of the imaging strategy and interpretation is dependent on the anatomical and functional variations between the major joints. There are in addition more generic chapters on trauma, rheumatology and bone tumours.
The articles are not designed to be comprehensive. There will be less emphasis on those conditions in which imaging has remained largely unchanged over the years and those that rarely enter the differential diagnosis on a day-to-day basis. These are well covered in standard textbooks.
The format of the chapters has been designed as an easy-to-use guide for the radiologists faced with a particular clinical scenario. For each particular clinical problem the recommended imaging strategy and the imaging findings of those conditions included in the differential diagnosis are provided.
Finally, for purposes of self assessment, a collection of multiple-choice questions and a picture quiz are included.
