Welcome to this chest edition of Imaging. We hope you find the topics covered of interest.

There are state of the art reviews of the imaging of lung cancer and pleural disease. The solitary pulmonary nodule is a real problem in every day clinical practice, as anybody who has attended a thoracic multi-disciplinary meeting will be only too aware. The options are considered in this edition – this may give a vivid indication to the novice that there aren't always "right answers" in some aspects of radiological practice.

The idiopathic interstitial pneumonias are often seen as a source of bewilderment to the newcomer with their "alphabet soup" of abbreviations. A recent re-classification represents an attempt to clarify the situation and in this edition the interstitial pneumonias as currently recognised are reviewed.

Cigarette smoking contributes to a variety of lung diseases aside from lung cancer and these are considered in a review with particular reference to emphysema. Recent developments in lung volume reduction surgery mean that it is essential that radiologists involved in chest imaging can confidently diagnose emphysema and have an idea of the types that might be amenable to surgical treatment.

Magnetic resonance imaging has made few in-roads into pulmonary imaging, in contrast to its success in areas such as neurology and musculoskeletal radiology. There could be advantages to patients if MRI could provide information that has been traditionally provided by ionizing radiation techniques such as nuclear medicine or CT, and such a vision is proposed here – time will tell if this becomes a reality!

As we said, we hope you find somethingsss of interest and enjoy this edition.
