- The nature and course of complication in bone marrow transplantation (BMT) are affected by many factors including: the host, the transplant and treatment regimens used.
- The primary complication of BMT is graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) where T-cells from the donor marrow produce an immune response against host tissue in the patient's skin, liver and gastrointestinal tract.
- The main complications of high-dose chemotherapy include infections and hepatic veno-occlusive disease (HVOD).
- Late complication following BMT include second malignancy, avascular necrosis and endocrine dysfunctions.
