Imaging in lung cancer

• Lung cancer is a common cancer with poor overall survival.
  
• The staging of non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer differ and a tissue diagnosis should be obtained where feasible.
  
• The minority of patients who are operable are important to identify in the staging process to optimize their curative treatment.
  
• A multitude of tests are available for staging but reliance on CT alone is no longer appropriate.
  
• Mediastinoscopy or positron emission tomography imaging of the mediastinum is recommended.
  
• The discussion for each individual patient within a multidisciplinary team optimizes the individual's care.
